Stony Crest Urban Farm – USDA Certified Organic
Where We Grow
We live and grow on 7 acres located on a bluff of the Blue River valley at the southern edge of the Marlborough neighborhood of KCMO. Our 1907 home, named Stony Crest, was developed as a “country get-a-way” for the family of veterinarian H.C. Babcock who worked at the K.C. stockyards and who was the first MO State Veterinarian. Along with the open space used for growing, we are guardians of riparian wetland, forest, glade and savannah micro-ecosystems. We also grow on leased land in our neighborhood and near the southeast boundary of Swope Park. During peak growing times, we have nearly three acres of land in production.
How We Grow
Because Stony Crest is an environmental oasis within the urban core, growing sustainably is critical. And, because the health of our customers is equally important to us, our farm is USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC. Certification involves a detailed annual review of all planning documents, purchases, field operation notes and harvest quantities along with an on-site inspection by a independent, highly trained organic specialist. We are subject to unannounced inspections and testing of soils and produce for prohibitive substances. Certification verifies for our customers that our farming practices meet the highest organic standards and that we improve biodiversity, conserve natural resources and build healthy soil by incorporating such things as non-GMO seeds, no till/low till methods, crop rotations, irrigation water conservation, mulching, and use of only biologically based fertilzers, pest controls and funicides - not synthetic chemically based products.
In addition to growing in open field settings, we grow in the ground under "High Tunnels", which are unheated, plastic covered greenhouse-like structures and under "Low Tunnels" which are caterpiller-arranged wire hoops covered with special fabric that allowis sun and water penetration. Growing in tunnels minimizes soil erosion, increases vegetable quality, reduces pests and disease pressures, and along with appropriate seed variety selection, they allows us to offer seasonal vegetables earlier in the spring, later in the fall, and throughout the winter. Our farming operation incorporates the use of four high tunnels and one combination high tunnel/greenhouse structure.
What We Grow
We produce more than 50 cultivars of vegetables, herbs, fruits and berries, along with perennials and bedding plants. We love growing the hundreds of varieties that provide you with the wonderful experience of color, texture, and taste innate in quality fresh vegetables. Rodger fancies himself as the "Tomato Whisper of Kansas City" because of the "old fashioned" tastes, colors, and array of shapes and sizes of heirloom, artisan, hybrid and cherry varieties we grow. Diane especially loves to grow peppers.
Bee hives are located on our home farm property.
