Crooked Bar N Ranch is located in the Flint Hills of Kansas on native tall grass prairie. Our pastures are teaming with diversity that provides an ideal environment to raise our cattle and poultry. Our pastures are unbroken and untreated. We believe in raising our livestock in a way that benefits the land and the animal.
We run a cow calf operation of registered Murray Grey cattle. Our cattle are one hundred percent grass fed and get baled prairie hay and alfalfa through the winter. Because our cattle are grass finished we take them to about twenty-four months of age and seasonally process (in mid summer). Our beef is healthier than conventionally raised beef because it is leaner, higher in Omega-3 fatty acids, contains anti-carcinogenic properties and is free from hormones and antibiotics. We sell our beef as individual cuts of meat and also plan to have 30-pound bundles available in the future.
The poultry we raise are a slow growing breed called Freedom Rangers. They are active foragers and have the benefit of free ranging on the prairie. The plant diversity, as well as the insects it attracts, supplements the their ration of certified organic non soy feed. We keep them in a predator proof coop at night and allow them complete access to the pasture during the day. We built our coop on an old hay wagon, which allows us to move it to fresh ground daily. Our birds have zero confinement during sunshine hours. We sell our poultry as whole birds with the neck attached. Giblets and feet are also available.
All of the livestock we raise are antibiotic and hormone free. Raising animals in a way that agrees with their natural biological processes (diet and habitat) helps keep them healthy. We believe in sustainable food and value responsible agriculture over profit. We currently sell our meat through farmers markets and directly from our ranch.
