Crooked Bar N Ranch is located in the Flint Hills of Kansas on native tall grass prairie. Our pastures are teaming with diversity that provides an ideal environment to raise our cattle and poultry. Our pastures are unbroken and untreated. We believe in raising our livestock in a way that benefits the land and the animal.

We run a cow calf operation of registered Murray Grey cattle. Our cattle are one hundred percent grass fed and get baled prairie hay and alfalfa through the winter. Because our cattle are grass finished we take them to about twenty-four months of age and seasonally process (in mid summer). Our beef is healthier than conventionally raised beef because it is leaner, higher in Omega-3 fatty acids, contains anti-carcinogenic properties and is free from hormones and antibiotics. We sell our beef as individual cuts of meat and also plan to have 30-pound bundles available in the future.

The poultry we raise are a slow growing breed called Freedom Rangers. They are active foragers and have the benefit of free ranging on the prairie. The plant diversity, as well as the insects it attracts, supplements the their ration of certified organic non soy feed. We keep them in a predator proof coop at night and allow them complete access to the pasture during the day. We built our coop on an old hay wagon, which allows us to move it to fresh ground daily. Our birds have zero confinement during sunshine hours. We sell our poultry as whole birds with the neck attached. Giblets and feet are also available.

All of the livestock we raise are antibiotic and hormone free. Raising animals in a way that agrees with their natural biological processes (diet and habitat) helps keep them healthy. We believe in sustainable food and value responsible agriculture over profit. We currently sell our meat through farmers markets and directly from our ranch. Please shoot us an email or give us a call with questions, thank you.

What sets our ranch apart is the unique landscape we operate on and the breeds of livestock we choose to raise. The Flint Hills are the last remaining native tall grass prairie in North America. Saved from the plow due to the flint rock that underlays the area, our ground is unbroken, untreated and contains hundreds of varieties of grasses and forbs. Our cattle aren’t just grass finished they are Flint Hills finished. Buffalo, elk and antelope historically grazed this prairie and had a mutually symbiotic relationship with the land. By responsibly grazing our cattle, it not only creates a superior cut of beef but also contributes to the health of the land. Murray Greys are a smaller framed breed and finish well on grass (although lean, they have good marbling). Our cattle are birthed on site and finished on site. We do not have to assist in birthing and the cattle lead a stress free life. Patient, calm handling of our stock not only favors the animals welfare but also produces a nicer cut of meat.

Our poultry also greatly benefit from getting their supplemental feed off of this diverse landscape, not to mention they love the fresh air, sunshine and being able forage unhindered by confinement. Our birds take longer to reach market weight than your typical meat bird (Cornish cross) but we embrace this slow growing breed due to their agility and ability to forage. Their legs are able to keep up with their growth rate and allow them to move with ease.

We are fortunate to operate on the richest expanse of grassland in the United States; it just makes sense to graze our cattle and range our poultry on this diverse landscape. Our ranch is dedicated to environmental sustainability, animal welfare and producing nutritious food.
